E-commerce and retail

Bramble Goods

Concept. An invented business, made to show how we would approach this sector. Not a client project. Real work is inthe work index.

A store where price, stock and delivery are settled before the click, and the shipping threshold is visible rather than buried in a policy page.

The premise
A homeware brand selling well on a marketplace that takes a cut of every order, with a store of its own that nobody can find and nobody finishes checking out on.

A shop is the one kind of website where the design is not arguing for a decision, it is handling one. Everything else here persuades someone to make contact. This has to take money without losing the person halfway through.

So the work sits in unglamorous places. Stock and delivery on the tile rather than three clicks in. A shipping threshold you can watch yourself approach. Sold out variants that say so at full contrast instead of quietly fading, because a shopper who picks a size and discovers the problem at checkout usually does not come back and try a different one.

This is also the concept that answers a practical question. Shopify and WooCommerce both sit on our stack strip, and until this one existed nothing on the site showed what we would do with either. Selling through a marketplace is a reasonable way to start and an expensive way to stay, because the cut compounds and the customer list belongs to somebody else.

Decisions

What we would do, and why.

  1. Nothing is a surprise at checkout

Most abandoned carts start with a number the shopper did not expect. Price, stock and the delivery date are all on the tile, before anything is added to the bag.

  2. The shipping threshold is drawn, not stated

A free shipping minimum only lifts order value if people can see how close they are to it. A sentence in the footer does nothing. A bar that fills does.

  3. Sold out is marked, never faded

A greyed out swatch reads as a paler colour, not as unavailable. Sold out variants keep full contrast and get a slash through them, so nobody picks a size and finds out at checkout.

  4. The catalogue is real HTML

Products rendered only by script are products search engines cannot rank. Every item here is a real page with a real address, which is most of what product SEO actually is.
